The Spanish government seeks to further restrict cigarette usage in both public and private spaces, announcing a “pioneering” law on the matter. The goal of the Health Ministry is to “achieve a situation where a non-smoker can live without being exposed.”

Areas where smoking or electronic cigarettes are banned may thus be extended to include bar terraces, beaches, and bus stops. More controversially, the new text ambitiously aims to prohibit smoking in private spaces where minors or sick people are present, including in cars and even homes.
Increase in Cigarette Prices
To encourage compliance with the new law among establishments and citizens, the Health Ministry also plans to increase fines for violators. Taxes will also be raised, mechanically driving up the price of cigarette packs and electronic cigarettes.
Finally, the new text does not neglect the environmental impact of cigarettes and will encourage municipal ordinances banning the disposal of cigarette butts in public spaces. It will be presented this Thursday to the public health committee.
